Women’s footwear has embraced more variations since 1900 than in the entire previous history of fashion. Balancing function and fantasy, the great designers of the 20th century have created some of the most beautiful shoes ever made, adapting styles from the past with a contemporary sensibility. This detailed shoe ornament captures the elegance of the original leather-and-silk spectators (a type of shoe with contrasting colors) in The Met’s Costume Institute collection, designed about 1914–19 by Pierre Yantorny (Italian, 1874–1936), the self-proclaimed “most expensive shoemaker in the world.”
